As your constituent, I write to ask you to work with other members of Congress to co-sponsor the Focus on Family Health Worldwide Act.

Re-introduced by Congresswoman McCollum (D-MN) in February, this act recognizes that voluntary family planning services are basic health services that should be recognized as such by the United States government. The Focus on Family Health Worldwide Act would increase U.S. support for services to the poorest communities throughout the world.

It is time for the United States to combat poverty around the world by ensuring access to basic health services for all. The Act supports programs that empower women, reduce maternal mortality, provide access to safe and legal abortions, and provide quality comprehensive sex education to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. If we do not act now we will continue to hinder international development and health programs, including family planning and reproductive health services.
